Special Educational Needs - WRL and Work Experience for Key Stage 3 - Key Stage 5

Our programmes are flexible and can be tailored to meet the challenges and requirements of students, teachers and staff in special schools and pupil referral units.  We are delighted to be able to offer the following funded programme.

We place a great emphasis on tailoring our programmes and activities to best suit the students’ requirements. We can take the most relevant activities from our broad range and change them to make them absolutely relevant. The natural progression through our activities is:

Job Taster Event / World of Opportunity

Employer representatives run a series of one-hour, hands-on workshops for students giving them a demonstration of various job roles.

Hats Assembly -Stimulate student’s interest and knowledge of different careers with the use of hats and uniforms.

Job Taster Trails -Introduce students to representatives from a wide range of careers during trails of places like Brindley Place, Bullring and Touchwood Shopping Centres and Sutton Mall.

Visits to Industry

Students visit businesses to learn about different jobs and the running of a business. This gives students a broader understanding of the world of work through direct contact with people from the business community. This also gives students an idea of what it’s like in a real working environment.

Practice Interviews

Employers are invited to conduct one-to-one interviews with students. Students complete a CV and an application form and the employer uses these in the interview. At the end of the session the employers give individual student feedback. This includes the importance of first impressions and positive body language. The event helps to prepare students for job and college interviews, giving them an understanding of how to write a good CV and how to complete an application form. Practice interviews also provide a greater understanding of the recruitment process. Additional support can be provided to prepare students in a number of ways, including presentations in assembly.

Visiting Speaker

Business speakers are invited to speak to students about their jobs, their companies and their industries. Speakers are sourced from a variety of business sizes, industry sectors and community groups.

Special Job Bites - Events we ran in 2010

Through a careers fair, this supported the detailed understanding of future careers and educational options available to students with learning difficulties and special educations needs.

Alternative to Work Experience

BTEC Alternative Work Experience provides a practical vocational programme of accredited learning for SEN students who may not be suited to traditional work experience placements. Projects are carried out at Birmingham Wheels and Ackers, both engaging environments for students.

 Programme Aims

  • To provide students with an alternative to the traditional work experience placements allowing them to develop independence in a secure setting
  • To engage students in practical learning and provide them with employability skills that could be used in their adult working life
  • Achievement of the Youth Service Award
  • Achievement of units of BTEC WorkSkills

 Programme Activities

This programme can be delivered as one five day session or a one day session each week for five weeks. The students will complete the following activities:

  • Building and servicing motorised vehicles
  • Health & Safety awareness
  • Vocational project – developing the link between learning at school and the world of work
  • Employers engaged to support work experience day on site
  • Accreditation – BTEC WorkSkills units such as conduct at work & managing your health and safety at work

The Enterprise Project Challenge - Alternative Work Experience

Students without work experience placements can take part in this employer linked event. Students are set a live business challenge by an employer and after visiting the employer, the students work on the challenge in school. At the end of the week, students present their projects to the employer. A diary is provided to students so they can record learning points during the week and they can evaluate their performance. This activity allows students to develop a greater understanding of skills, attitudes and qualities required for work. They make decisions as a team, identify skills and abilities, and work with an employer to fulfil a specific brief. It also helps to develop enterprise, communication and project management skills.

Termly meetings for Special Schools

We hold termly meetings for teachers from special schools to inform them about activities from BXL which will include updates from our Work Experience Team. Also guest speakers from businesses and the community will talk about opportunities for special needs students.
