Starting Work

Each year, from February through to May, opportunities that are deemed to be suitable for people without much experience or training, such as those leaving school in June are specially targeted. Many of these are Apprenticeships and some have closing dates between March and May, so you need to keep checking regularly and get your application in early to have the best chance. All of these vacancies can be found on the Connexions website and a link is given at the end of this section.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a great way to earn money while studying for a recognised qualification. There are over 180 different Apprenticeships available across a whole range of sectors and businesses both large and small really value the scheme because it means the people they employ are receiving the training that is directly relevant to their particular organisation. To find out more, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk

Jobs with training

Many jobs will offer on-the-job training and some may also provide the opportunity to gain work-related qualifications. Training at work can improve your chances of being promoted as well as giving you better job security and skills you can use in future jobs.

Jobs without training

Some jobs don't offer any formal training, although there would be very few that would expect you to be able to "hit the ground running" from day one. Just a word of caution though, even if wages appear to be high to begin with, there probably will be very few opportunities to progress.

Temporary and Part time jobs

Positions become available across a whole range of sectors from retail, care, hair and beauty, hospitality etc. These can be a great way to boost your experience and to try out different jobs.

For all current and school leaver vacancies in Birmingham and Solihull go to www.connexions-bs.co.uk.

Volunteering and personal development

It may be that the job you are looking for either isn't on offer at the moment, or requires you to have some experience. Either way, volunteering or personal development opportunities can provide you with valuable experience. Have a look at these links Volunteering Opportunities and Personal Development Opportunities.
