Looking for Jobs
It's a tough old world out there for anyone currently looking for a new job, especially when you consider the wealth of experience that those who have recently been made redundant have to offer.
So, what can you do to make sure you have a fighting chance of getting that job?
Firstly, capitalise on your youth!
- Use your command of Information Technology to show the employer that you can bring efficiencies to their working practices.
- Use your enthusiasm and willingness to learn to let the employer know that in you, they will have someone they can shape to the needs of their business, not someone who's done it all before and wants to do things their way.
- Show the employer that you are hungry for the job and looking to develop a career with them - this will show them that you have done some research and know a little about them.
A few more pointers:
- When making job applications, make sure you follow the process. If you're asked to fill in an application form don't send a CV. If the application method is to telephone, the chances are the employer will be listening for your communication skills, so make sure you've rehearsed what you're going to say beforehand, and speak clearly.
- Consider what you can bring to the job. You may not have done this job before, but you can still relate skills and experience you have gained while doing part time or voluntary work.
- Tell the employer why you want this particular job - try to bring in some of your interests, for example, if you are applying for a job as a Sales Assistant in a sports shop, tell them what you know about sports.
- If you can't get the job you want because you need experience, consider a short period of voluntary work. It will prove to the employer that you are serious about wanting this type of work and will also give you the necessary experience.
