Alternatives to School - Work Placements and Programmes

Many parents and carers turn to us for advice when their child becomes unsettled at secondary school. We know that secondary school isn’t suitable to all young people and we run a number of programmes that provide an alternative to the traditional classroom environment, providing your child with a range of activities and qualifications that can help to get them back into education, further training or employment.
This is a nine day programme that will give you a combination of work experience and the opportunity to complete units of the BTEC in Workskills. When you have completed the programme you will have the workskills you need to get a job. Your nine days will be spread over a number of weeks and the following is a guideline of what you can do on the programme:

Extended Work Placement
If you just want to get as much work experience as you can, we can help you to find an extended work placement where you can go to work for one day a week for up to three school terms. This will give you up to 18 days of work experience, something that will be very valuable when you go to look for full time work. It might also happen that you find you want to get onto a course to develop more skills and we can help you to do that too.
Employability Days We can run a number of courses for you that will help you develop the skills to improve your chances of gaining employment. The types of sessions that we can run include development of a range of skills that employer's value, including communications skills, team working and problem solving. Health and Safety Accredited Course Health and safety is very important no matter where you decide to work and we can help you to get the Entry Level Award in Workplace Hazards Awareness. This is a recognised accreditation and it’s something that you can add to your CV with pride as it shows that you will be a responsible employee and take care while at your place of work. BTEC Workskills We can help you to get your BTEC in Workskills qualifications and these will help you to develop the skills that you need to be a good employee. There are a number of different types of short courses which will lead you to the full qualification and it will be up to you which route you want to take. We can make it easy for you by making some suggestions. Working alongside designated learning providers, the Elev8 programme delivers bespoke courses, both accredited and non-accredited, onto which young people are referred. These courses can include personal social development, vocational skills work experience amongst others. Young people are assessed and supported throughout the duration of the course by outreach workers. After the initial course Elev8 work with the young people to sustain full time education, employment or training.
